PESHAWAR - Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legal fraternity on Saturday alleged that their party-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has totally failed to follow the policy of merit in appointing law offices in the province.

“Provincial Minister for Law Israrullah Gandapur has totally ignored the policy of merit, the first clause of PTI manifesto, while appointing law officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the additional advocate general (AAG) and deputy advocate general (DAG) posts,” said Arshad Yousafzai, member of Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF), while addressing a news conference here at Peshawar Press Club. He alleged that nepotism, favouritism and use of force and money were the criteria for the appointment of 15 new law officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Flanked by Noroz Khan, Shahbaz Khan and other lawyers affiliated with ILF, he alleged that law minister appointed 15 law officers at important key positions in the province. He said either these 15 law officers belong to other political parties or have less experience. He also alleged that a law officer Waqar Ahmad, recently appointed as additional advocate general, was a former civil judge who was forced to resign on corruption charges in Waheeda Rahman Vs Jehanzeb Rahim case.

Similarly, Naved Akhtar is an Awami National Party worker and had served as advocate general, while Yousaf Qureshi was additional AG in the former ANP-led provincial government. He said that law officers Adeel Bhutt, Sanaullah, Javid Khan were APML, PML-N and JUI-F workers respectively, he claimed. Those who belonged to PTI to some extant don’t come up with the relevant criteria of minimum experience, age limit and fighting successful cases in Peshawar High Court, he maintained.

Besides, Abdul Latif Yousafzai hailing from district Swabi was an Ahmedi, who as per constitution, has no right to carry such an important post in the apex judiciary, the ILF leader blamed.

The ILF workers were also of the view that these are political positions and the PTI government should prefer its own workers, as taking its own people was not an illegal action. They demanded cancellation of a notification issued for the appointment of 15 new law officers in violation of the merit policy.

They alleged that Chief Minister and Law Minister were telling a lie for following merit and eradicating corruption, and termed it a shameful act, and a joke with Pakhtuns, as violation of merit policy was adopted by its own PTI-led government.
