ISLAMABAD - Terming the holding of elections in free, fair and transparent fashion as only way forward, Quami Watan Party President Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao advised the major political parties to remove the confusion and uncertainty on political horizon of the country by installing the caretaker setup in centre and provinces at the earliest. In an exclusive chat with TheNation, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, who has recently changed the nomenclature of his faction of Pakistan People’s Party as Quami Watan Party, said that by doing politics on caretaker setup the mainstream parties are not performing any service to the country as well as democracy, and advised the leadership of these parties to fulfil their constitutional obligation by immediately installing the caretaker set-up at centre and provinces. To a question he said that in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, although ruling coalition has said many a times that they have completed their homework regarding caretaker yet they have not initiated any formal process for picking up the caretaker chief minister with opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.Sherpao said that any attempt to delay the elections would have disastrous implications and stressed the need of holding timely elections in free and fair fashion for which all the stakeholders should play their due role.To a question about the possibility of electoral alliance of his party with some other political player, particularly in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, he said that the chances of entering into electoral alliance with any other political party are minimal. However, negotiations with Jamaat-I-Islami and Jamiat-I-Ulema-I-Islam(Fazl Group) are underway for seat adjustment in certain areas. He agreed to the point that due to poor law and order situation the movement of political leaders, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, would be restricted to a great extend but he did not consider precarious law and order any valid reason for postponement of general elections. He, however, admitted that holding of elections in the panic-gripped atmosphere would definitely have impact on the elections results as besides hampering the free movement of the political leaders sizeable numbers of voters out of fear would also stay away from the whole exercise.Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, who had survived a number of attempts on his life in the past, was committed to play proactive role in politics and was busy planning his election campaign for his party. To a question about the expected impact of extension of Political Parties Act to Tribal Areas Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that in his view in upcoming elections there would little impact on the results of the elections and the political parties would not be able to make any major inroads in these areas except the religious parties which were already commanding control in some parts of these areas. He, however, said that the joining of incumbent MPs from these areas in mainstream political parties could have some impact on the results of upcoming elections. To a question Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said that his party would be landing in the elections arena with the slogan to give true representation to the Pashtun nationals who have been the worst affected by ongoing war on terror. He further said that the dilemma of Pashtun nationals is that they are facing the brunt of war on terror and contrary to their sacrifices in the war they are being dubbed as terrorist. He said that his party would portray the true image of the Pashtuns from the platform of his party and that was the reason he had changed the nomenclature of his party as Qoumi Watan Party mainly to reflect the true and moderate face of the Pashtuns both within the country and abroad.
