The PML-N and JUI-F agreed on cooperation during the upcoming general elections following a meeting between party leaders here in Lahore on Monday. Both parties have formed committees to chalk out the modalities of the alliance.

Speaking to the media following their meeting, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif said his party wanted to stop those people who were against free, fair elections and were trying to delay them.

He said both the parties agreed to strengthen democracy and for timely, fair and free elections and for this purpose they would cooperate with each other. He said they have formed committees to devise strategy for such a cooperation.

Nawaz Sharif said the issue of formation of caretaker set up particularly at the federal level came up for discussion. He said he is in favour of consultation with all the stakeholders for caretaker setups at the federal and provincial level.

He praised Maulana Fazlur Rehman as a democrat and working for peace. He said he is in favour of cooperation among all the parties before and after the elections to over come the multifarious challenges facing the country.

The PML-N President said his party would attend the All Parties Conference being convened by the JUI (F) in Islamabad on 28th February for peace in FATA. The sources said that Nawaz Sharif had named Nisar, Jhagra and Raja Zafar-ul-Haq as the PML-N delegation to participate in the APC.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said there was also agreement with the PML-N to have a consensus on names for the caretaker government. He said the PML-N and JUI (F) have identical views on national issues and both the parties will cooperate with each other in the elections.

In reply to a question, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the offer of talks by Taliban was a positive development and it should be responded in a positive way.  He said it was necessary that all the political forces should devise a collective stance about talks with the Taliban before considering the issue as to who would be the guarantor for the Taliban.

On this occasion, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the PML-N was holding consultations with other opposition parties about caretaker Prime Minister. He said constitutionally, consultation between the Prime Minister and leader of the opposition will be held once the Assembly was dissolved.

Earlier during their meeting, Nawaz and Fazl discussed the prevailing political situation and issues of mutual interest.

Senior PML-N leaders including Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Raja Zafarul Haq, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra were also present on the occasion.
