LAHORE – Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) won the 60th National Cycling Championship team event title here on Sunday at the cycling velodrome. Noor Alam of SSGC won the individual title and was also declared the best cyclist of the event. At the closing ceremony of the event, MD SSGC Zuhair Siddiqi was the chief guest while SSGC Sports Board president Yousaf J Ansari, Athletic Federation of Pakistan (AFP) president Major Gen (r) Akram Sahi, Pakistan Gymnastic Federation (PGF) President Khawaja Farooq, Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) secretary Col (retd) Ahmed Yar Khan Lodhi, PCF SVP Col Asghar Bodla, PSF secretary Syed Azhar Ali Shah and large number of male and female viewers were also present on the occasion. PCF president Munawar Baseer Ahmed welcomed the guests. He also introduced the teams with the chief guest. Four events were held on the last day of the event including 4km individual pursuit, 1km team sprint, 4km team pursuit and elimination race. SSGC scored 220 points to win the first position in the team event while Pakistan Army grabbed second with 198 points and Punjab third with 62 points. Noor of SSGC notched up the first position in the individual event with 55 points and was also declared the best cyclist of the event. M Sajid of Army won the second position with 51 points while Habib Ullah of SSGC got third with 40 points. Talking to this scribe, Baseer said: “The participation of different departments and players made the event successful. It was a wonderful activity providing the players opportunities to remain in action and exhibit their skills at national level.” He said the PCF would announce the probrbales for the Asian Cycling Championship today (Monday) while the 12-memebr men and women team for the event would be finalised on March 1. “We want to promote the game as well as players instead of involving ourselves in fighting with bogus body and officials. We are doing our best for the players and therefore sending them to appear in the international event,” he added. The PCF chief thanked to Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for helping the federation and hoped they would continue this support in order to boost the game and promote the cyclists across the country.
