LAHORE-Thousands of lawyers, political workers and representatives of the civil society accorded a tumultuous reception to deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary on his fourth arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport on Saturday afternoon. Iftikhar's plane landed at 12:30 pm amid tight security and was received by Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood Khan, President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Ali Ahmed Kurd, former SCBA President Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and deposed Supreme Court Judge, Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday. Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah reached Lahore along with Justice Iftikhar. Justice Iftikhar had a brief meeting with them at the AIIA VIP lounge, discussing the lawyer's movement and thanked them for such an auspicious welcome. As soon as the arrival of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry was announced at AIIA, the anxiously waiting supporters, workers of PML (N), Tehreek-e-Insaaf, Jamaat-e-Islami and Khaksar Tehreek amongst others ran out of patience and in an effort to be the first to greet him, tried breaching the arrival terminal boundary to enter the lounge. The airport authorities announced and advised the lawyers and other supporter to stay calm and not to violate the boundaries specified, however, the excited supporters continued their ambitious strive to get inside the passengers lounge and to contain them the Airport Security Force (ASF) had to resort to baton charge to control the situation. A large number of lawyers, workers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islami and various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) had gathered outside the airport chanting anti-government and pro-CJP slogans until the CJP's caravan, consisting of more than 100 cars, left for the venue. Justice Iftikhar's caravan left the airport at 1:30 pm. The Punjab government had provided Iftikhar Chaudhry with a bulletproof car and had deployed strict security measures all throughout the route of his caravan to the Punjab Bar. Political activists and members of civil society organisations who were anxiously waiting for the CJP burst into chants as soon as he appeared. There were chanting 'Chief Tere Janesar Beshumar' (Chief you have countless devotees) and showered rose petals on him. Workers of the PML- N and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) were prominent in the crowd. Political parties including the PML-N, PTI, JI and civil society groups had set up camps along The Mall to receive the CJP before the main venue- the Punjab Bar Council Building where Bar had arranged All Pakistan Lawyers' Convention. They gave warm welcome to Chaudhry's convoy of vehicles on reaching their camps. The PbBC arranged 5000 seats for the participants at the venue staged on the road outside the council building, still a large number of black coats listened to CJP's address while standing up. The bar has also invited all districts to attend the event and they responded well and thronged the venue. The Punjab government made elaborate security arrangements for the CJP's motor caravan and deployed an Elite force squad to accompany the CJP's convoy. The traffic police had also taken special measures for Chaudhry's visit as the roads linking the CJP's convoy route were closed for traffic. Chaudhry's caravan reached the venue after six hours. Talking to the media at the AIIA, President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Ali Ahmed Kurd said that the lawyer's movement has now entered its third and final phase, and it has been over a year and the movement is getting stronger, he said that Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry is a symbol of impartial justice and truth, and the government should reinstate him and restore the November 2, 2007 judiciary. He said the lawyers' movement has been peaceful all through its course, however, if the government refuses to adhere to their demands they might be forced to resort to a different approach. Former SCBA president Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said that the charter of democracy clearly delineates what the government should do. He said that the current government themselves were a part of this movement before being elected and they know how this movement played a vital role in dethroning dictatorship. Aitzaz said that it would be wise and in favor of the government itself to restore the November 2 judiciary before the March 9th long-march.
