ISLAMABAD (APP) - Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and Piyam Nu University (PNU) of Iran would benefit with each other's research programmes in the field of Islamic, Social, Cultural and Iqbaliyat that would further strengthen the friendly relationship of both the countries. Vice Chancellor (VC) of AIOU, Prof. Dr. Mehmood-ul-Hassan stated this after a brief meeting with 3-members delegation of PNU presided by Dr. Katib, the Chief Advisor and VC of PNU here on Saturday. Other members of the delegation including Dr Rizvi Ibrahimi, the Rector, Science College and Multi Media Education, PNU and Dr Nargis Muhammad Badar, Director General of International Relations, PNU were present on the occasion. The members of coordination committee to the Iranian delegation were Murtaza, the Cultural Counselor of Iran, Zakria, Director, Iran culture house; Dr Haider Raza, PRO and Press Attach of Iran Embassy were present to assist the delegation. Exchanging bilateral views over the distant learning programmes, the VC of AIOU said the two neighbor countries had been enjoining brotherly relations for the centuries and retained the common interest in religion and culture and social programmes. He gave due credit to former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the pioneer of AIOU, which ranked the second big distant learning university across the world and holding top position in the Asia. The main purpose to establish the university was to facilitate the under privileged or those living in the remote areas or unable to access the formal education, he remarked. Giving brief information about the progress of the university, Mehmood- ul Hassan said the University was worked out in more than 35departments in which 1300 courses of various specialities had been taught. He said all courses were taught from basic studies to at PhD level. Vice Chancellor hoped that in February 2009, the spring semester, total number of admission would reach to one million students. He said the university degree was acceptable both in and outside the country. University was successfully operating the educational programmes in Central Asia, he remarked. "AIOU's four years undergraduate programme is another feather on his cap". VC said. The educationist of Open University also provided academic course of developed countries to its students, he said, adding, for the last few years the it had facilitated its students through Internet, F.M Radio and Video conferencing as well. The University had also established a 'Science Complex' inside the campus building in which a science laboratory maintained. This institution worked out following with the "Da-ul-Hikmah" developed in Baghdad to make scientific research in collaboration with the experts of Iran. University had regularly published 'Research General' at international level. Dr Katib, the VC of PNU appreciated AIOU's major contribution in the field of science and technology. He termed the university's efforts as the landmark development in Pakistani society. While discussing the brief contribution of PNU, he said among 30 million Irani students in the age of 18 to 20 years, one third had secured their admission at PNU. He said Iran's largest printing press was functioning in the university. The university has 188 regional campus were working at different places of the country in which students secured admission in postgraduate also, besides graduation and under graduation.
