PESHAWAR - Vice Chancellor of Bacha Khan University, Charsadda, Dr Fazal Rahim Marwat Sunday asked federal government to announce special awards ‘Tamgha-e-Shujaat’ for those who sacrificed their lives at Bacha Khan University.

Four armed terrorists stormed Bacha Khan University and martyred at least 21 persons mostly students at a boys hostel of the university on January 20 last. All the four terrorists were also killed by police and army in the attack.

The VC said that the government should honour these martyred by announcing ‘Tamgha-e-Shujaat’ for them. Talking to The Nation, Dr Fazal Rahim Marwat said that the university would be re-opened for university’s staffers today (Monday).

However, in the same breath, he said that classes would be started shortly with a pledge to end the evils and darkness.

On Monday (Today) a condolence reference would be arranged at the auditorium of the University where teachers, students and other staffers would offer collective prayers for the departed souls and those who injured in the terrorist attack on Bacha Khan University.

Recalling the gory incident, Dr Rahim Marwat said that “I was on way to the university, when I was told that armed men had attacked the university building. I was stopped at Nisatta Police Station, some two kilometres away from the university campus”.

Poets and literary figures had been invited to participate in a purely literary gathering which was being on the campus in connection with the 28th death anniversary of Bacha Khan, when the terrorist attacked on the University, the VC informed.

“I had already cautioned security staff of the university in the wake of threats to educational institutions. But there was no specific threat to Bacha Khan University,” he explained.

He lauded the quick response of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police and Pakistan Army for reaching in time and confining the terrorists to a building and eliminating them on the spot.

“No pressure on me either from parents or relatives of those who died in January 20’s attack” he said. “We will build a memorial inside the campus in memory of those who lost their lives in the horrific attack on the University” he maintained.

About reconstruction work, the VC informed that repairing of damaged and bullet-stricken buildings walls and windows had been started after preliminary investigation.

This is need of the day to change syllabus, discourage the culture of guns and work for peace collectively, he was of the view.

Certainly, it is now a dilemma that terrorists are targeting educational institutions. So the whole nation must join the security forces to foil the designs of those who are out to deprive our children of acquiring modern education and know-how, Dr Fazal Rahim Marwat concluded.
