PESHAWAR : Police on Monday recovered a bullet-riddled body of a lady health visitor (on polio duty) who was abducted by armed men Sunday midnight. To record their anguish, her family members, relatives and dozens of other people took to the streets and blocked the Peshawar motorway in protest.

According to the police, around seven masked armed men barged into the house of LHV Salma Ghani, 32, situated at Guluzai locality, took her family members hostage at gunpoint and decamped with her. The police said the kidnappers also took away five-tolas of gold from the house. Later, the police recovered the bullet-riddled body of Salma Ghani from a field in Daudzai area.

It is worth mentioning that Salma, the mother of two children, was shot at several times. The motive behind the murder could not be ascertained. Reportedly, she was regularly taking part anti-polio vaccination drives. Her family sources said they had no enmity with anyone.

Chamkani police have registered an FIR on the complaint of Salma’s husband, Karim Khan. The news of the LHV’s killing spread like a jungle fire as hundreds of people, including her family members and relatives, staged a protest demonstration and blocked the Peshawar Motorway for all sorts of traffic for about one hour.

The protesters chanted slogans against the police and the government over their failure to provide protection to the citizens. They also demanded arrest of the killers.

The demonstrators called off their protest on the assurance of the police that the killers would be apprehended within two days,.

It is worth mentioning here that since December 2012, a total of 56 people affiliated with anti-polio drive have been killed in attacks carried out in different parts of the country. This situation has badly hampered the polio campaign in the country.
