Rawalpindi - The participants of a rally taken out to mark Chehlum of Mumtaz Qadri thrashed two traffic wardens at Liaquat Bagh, sources and eyewitnesses told The Nation yesterday.

They said the activists of various religious parties carried out a rally in connection to make preparations for holding Chehlum of Malik Mumtaz Qadri , who was executed for killing former governor Salman Taseer, when some of participants were stopped by two wardens at Liaquat Bagh.

The wardens and participants went into verbal clash over some comments against Qadri by wardens. Later, the activists have thrashed the wardens. Passer-bys and shopkeepers rescued the wardens, sources and witnesses said.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Shoaib Khurram Janbaz when contacted said that reportedly a brawl occurred between wardens and participants of the rally at Liaquat Bagh. He added that the activists thrashed a warden Ijaz but later the dispute was settled.

Meanwhile, City Traffic Police launched a campaign against the transporters who involved in fleecing the passengers despite cut in oil prices and issuance of revised fare lists.

The CTP, following the instructions of CTO, issued fine tickets to some 40 transporters while impounded 60 other vehicles in different police stations on account of charging extra fares from passengers.

CTO Shoaib Khurram Janbaz said that strict action would be taken against those transporters found involved in looting poor passengers.
