BHAKKAR-Profiteering will not be tolerated and the Assistant Commissioners concerned along with Tehsildar, Veterinary Doctor, the DDO (Agriculture) and members Market Committee will be responsible to check and control price hike and ensure quality of daily-use items. DCO Mumtaz Hussain Zahid stated this while presiding over a meeting of District Price Control Committee and members of Trade Unions here the other day. During the meeting prices of various items were fixed as par: Vegetable Ghee Rs142 per kg, Rice (aree) Rs45, Rice (Basmati) Rs118, Pulse (Masoor) Rs130, Pulse (Maash) Rs108, Moong Rs100, Gram Rs40 to 55, Pepper (Red)170, Mutton Rs500, Beef Rs250, Milk Rs50, Yogurt Rs60, Bread (100 grams) Rs5 and Sugar Rs58.

It is, however, amazing that no member of Consumers’ Association was present in the meeting. The absence of any representative of consumers provided an opportunity to the DCO to extend relief to some of his ‘favourable’ traders as various daily-use items are ‘reportedly’ being sold at rates in the market. The consumers and social circles are annoyed with the rates fixed by the DCO and consider this step as inimical to the Punjab government efforts to control price hike and provide relief to the general public.
