Airlines regulated by IATA and ICAO have to abide by certain rules, regulations and international norms. Even in the aftermath of the heightened security environment post 911, a passenger holding a valid ticket and a confirmed booking cannot be denied boarding except when credible evidence exists that he may be a potential threat to the safety of the aircraft and its passengers. Even in the USA when Delta Airlines recently offloaded a Muslim family based on suspicion of other passengers, the matter was investigated and the airline offered a public apology. The recent offloading of Ali Ahmed Kurd, an eminent lawyer and President of Supreme Court Bar at Quetta by PIA, was a politically-motivated and malafide act by PIA management, unbecoming of a commercial airline. This airline which has more accumulated losses in the year 2008 than the total annual deficit of NWFP and Balochistan, should not be allowed to become a tool for political manipulation. PIA is a state owned airline, funded by the taxpayers and should be run strictly in accordance with rules and regulated in accordance with the international norms. -SHAHZAD KHALIL, Sialkot, via e-mail, March 19.
