LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami has stressed upon the countrymen to join its anti-corruption drive, calling it a religious duty to rise against injustice.

“The two major parties of the country have fixed their turns for government and are protecting each other’s corruption,” JI chief Sirajul Haq said yesterday, without naming the ruling PML-N and PPP in opposition. “If one minister could swallow Rs462 billion, the level of corruption of whole government would be unimaginable,” added Siraj while referring to PPP’s Asim Hussain. He recalled that a former NAB chairman had stated on record that corruption to the tune of Rs12b was taking place in the country every day.

Mr Haq suggested that an effective control over corruption and recovery of the plundered wealth lying abroad could only free the country from the clutches of IMF and World Bank. “This will provide us sufficient funds for mega projects including dams,” he believed.

The senator vowed he will not rest till rid the country of corruption.

Terming it the mother of all evils, Sirajul Haq urged religious leaders, journalists, lawyers, workers, and farmers to support the JI campaign against corruption and “take to its logical end”.
