ISLAMABAD - President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has called for a roundtable conference of the former cricket greats to address the beleaguered situation of the game. The president was to meet the national cricket team but the meeting was cancelled to avoid useless criticism after the team's dismal performance in the recently-concluded three-match series against Sri Lanka. On Monday the president directed the officials of Pakistan Cricket Board to establish a strong team for the international competitions particularly for the Pakistan-Australia series, ICC Champions Trophy and World Cup 2011, which will be held in Pakistan respectively. Also, poor show of the national team against Sri Lanka came under discussion. "The government will provide high security to overseas players during the international cricket competitions in Pakistan," he said while talking to the Chairman PCB, Ijaz Butt at President House after an award distributing ceremony. Asif Ali Zardari said the Australia team would be ensured for providing security to each play and official during their Pakistan tour. "There is no threat to sports and sportsmen in Pakistan because the people of Pakistan love sports and players," he said. However, President, who is also patron-in-chief of the PCB, lamented that the standard of the cricket in the country. "There was an urgent need to take effective steps to revive our undisputed position in cricket world and past glory. The officials and players have to work hard to uplift the standard of the game in the country," he added. Zardari asked to PCB to hold maximum inter-regional competitions and urged veteran cricketers to convene a roundtable for revival of the game at national level. "The former wizards of cricket should examine the present status of the game and recommend their proposals for the improvement. Pakistan was a world champion and cricketing was one of the elements of the country's international recognition," he maintained. While addressing a ceremony here at the President House to give away prizes to winners of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Memorial Cricket, the President recalled that Pakistan once led the cricket world and won several international laurels. He, however, regretted that over the past few years, the quality of the game had declined and there was a need that veteran players, coaches and captains sit together to formulate a strategy for its revival. Zardari extended full support of the government in holding the international cricket matches that would be helpful for boosting the standard of the game in the country. He repeated that the roundtable should come up with recommendations for launching cricket across the country at school and college level, so that young and fresh blood is inducted, that can be groomed and trained for serving at the national level. The President suggested that the large corporations sponsor teams at different tiers to cultivate young cricketers who can win laurels for the country. Federal Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, Provincial Minister for Sports Sindh Syed Muhammad Ali Shah, Chairman PCB, Ijaz Butt and other officials of relevant ministries and PCB were also present on the occasion. Later he gave away the prizes to winners of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Memorial Cricket Championship. Skipper of the Rawalpindi team Babar Naeem received the trophy while he (Babar Naeem) got the award of the man of the match of the final fixture. Shahdab Kabir, captain runners-up team Karachi also got the runner-up trophy while Rauf Akbar, Noumanullah, Nasir Abbas, and Mohammad Salman got the awards of best bowler, best batman, best all rounder and best wicketkeeper respectively. It is pertinent to mention here that the Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Memorial Cricket Championship matches were played on league basis in Islamabad, Lahore, Hyderabad and Karachi and as many as sixteen national teams fought for the top honour. Rawalpindi Cricket Association defeated Port Qasim Trust Authority in the final at Diamond cricket ground Islamabad. Also, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), National Bank Limited (NBP) and other organizations participated in the championship.
