ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari Monday asked Governor Punjab Salman Taseer to establish good working relationship with the PML-N led provincial government. Governor Punjab called on President Asif Ali Zardari here at Aiwan-e-Sadr and briefed him on socio-political and economic situation of the Punjab. He apprised him of the ongoing development activities in different areas of the Province. President Zardari directed the Governor to avoid bitterness with the provincial government, as the PPP was paying due respect to the public mandate, reliable sources cited the President as saying. He was of the view that there should be improvement in the relationship between the two major parties - PPP and PML-N. He wants close coordination and understanding among the democratic forces. After top leadership of both PPP and PML-N met last week, both sides revisited their policy of confrontation and agreed on working together to lessen differences. Both the parties, which signed Charter of Democracy (CoD), entered into confrontation even threatening each other to destabilise the Punjab and the Central Governments. President Asif Ali Zardari and Punjab Chief Minister and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif's last contact helped in reducing the tension for a while. However, there was no final outcome but both leaders decided to work on improving the working relationship. The Governor Punjab apprised the President of overall situation in the Province and the complaints of the PPP ministers and party workers. Online adds: Zardari impressed on Taseer to put aside his confrontational stance and respect the political mandate of PML-N in Punjab. According to the sources the matters related to tug of war in Punjab, differences with PML-N and other matters of political nature were also discussed in the meeting. President Zardari, according to the sources, made it clear to the Governor that all political conflicts with the PML-N government should be put aside. He said believes in the stability of democratic institutions and wants to work with PML-N for the development and prosperity of the province. He emphasized that he would not allow the destabilising of PML-N government in Punjab, requiring the governor to stop his interference in the Nazim corruption issue, the sources said. Speaking on the occasion the Governor maintained that he has no conflict with the Chief Minister Punjab and that is only fulfilling his constitutional role. He said the exercise of writing letter to CM was also done in this context. The Governor also took the President into confidence on his meeting with MQM chief Altaf Hussain, the sources further revealed. The Governor also assured the President that he would ensure the development projects completing in the Punjab, stressing that he would continue to work for the welfare and betterment of the people. Governor Taseer also called on Rehman Malik, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, at lunch at his residence on Monday. The two discussed issues pertaining to the law and order situation, bilateral interests and party's affairs. During the meeting, Rehman Malik told the Governor Punjab that the government was taking all-out possible measures and utilising all available resources to maintain law and order in the province while the Punjab province will be fully facilitated in this connection, he added. Rehman Malik further said it is prime responsibility of the government to ensure protection of lives and property of masses. He made it clear that those disrupting law and order situation will be dealt with iron hand Taseer also briefed Rehman Malik about the law and order situation of the province.
