ISLAMABAD - Following PPP's decision to boycott, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Friday decided to fully support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Justice (r) Wajihuddin Ahmed in the presidential poll.

“We will support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate on July 30 in the presidential election,” said Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Munawar Hassan, talking to The Nation.

About PPP’s decision to boycott the presidential poll, Munawar Hassan said it would prove harmful for their party. “It is tradition of PPP that the party does not accept the SC decision in any matter,” he said, adding it had accepted no decision of the Supreme Court during the last five years. “We thought PPP will change its stance after completion of Zardari’s term, but it is still on its previous track,” he maintained.

Munawar was of the view that there was no proper ground for staying away from the presidential poll just three days before. To a question, he said PPP had not informed JI before taking this decision.

Arshad Bhatti from Lahore adds: Sources in JI are of the view that the major cause behind not supporting the PML-N’s presidential candidate was MQM’s decision of backing Nawaz League.

When contacted, JI leader Liaqat Baloch supporting party sources line said “As the PML-N has decided to get the support of MQM, the JI which has not made any commitment to the PML-N finally decided to back the PTI contender.”
