RAWALPINDI - Despite Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif's pledge to change police station culture and provide justice to every crime victim, Rawalpindi Police are moving in opposite direction by shielding and protecting the high and mighty involved in heinous crimes and punishing the poor and helpless for crimes they never committed.

Such blunders and well thought-out planning to twist facts are not new in the police department. But the recent move of Rawalpindi police, declaring a notorious gangster Imtiaz Ali alias Taji Khokhar, two of his sons and some police officers involved in murder of a lady in Dhoke Gangal on land dispute innocent by former Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Airport Aziz Aslam Niazi in his investigation report and giving clean chit to PML-N stalwart Hanif Abbasi, former MNA, in a case of attacking on police bus and resisting police authority at a public rally on May 7, have rattled everybody.

Investigation has been launched against the SHO by Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) Rawalpindi Region with getting four days physical remand of Niazi while Regional Police Officer Naseem-uz-Zaman also threw the police report quashing Hanif Abbasi from charges into dustbin and gave seven days to SHO PS Waris Khan to re-launch investigation in the case.

However, legal and police experts interviewed by The Nation view these steps mere an eyewash and these cases would also be pushed under the carpet after some time, as it happened in the past.

According to them, accountability in police department is very weak as the police investigators involved in giving twist to high profile murder, car-theft or kidnapping for ransom cases after allegedly taking money from opponents are never brought to book by police bosses or court of laws.

Despite their (investigators') malpractices, they are given punishment by high-ups, though some time they are arrested but finally they managed to get reinstated and even get postings of their own choice either by using political influence or other ways. They demanded of the CM to tighten noose around the corrupt police officers and punish them in the better interest of the people of the province.
