UNITED NATIONS - The United Nations is in "close daily contact" with the Pakistani government, including the National and Provincial Disaster Management Agencies, on the grim situation in Karachi where a deadly heatwave has claimed hundreds of lives, a UN spokesman said Friday.

But, Spokesman Farhan Haq said the UN has not received any request for assistance and the response is being handled entirely by the government of Pakistan.

"Should a request be forthcoming, the UN is prepared to assist as necessary," he added.
