ASHRAF JAVED and JAM SAJJAD HUSSAIN LAHORE Two bystanders who witnessed the entire episode from a close distance when gunmen abducted Shahbaz Taseer from Gulberg area on Friday have provided key information to the investigators, it was reliably learnt on Saturday. They were incidentally on the spot when the gunmen arrived there. They closely watched the abductors, their weapons and vehicles. They remained on the crime scene till the kidnappers sped away, seeking anonymity, a top police investigator told this reporter but did not mention further details due to the sensitivity of the issue. One thing we have established so far is that the kidnapping case is 100 per cent genuine, said the officer who met and interviewed the eyewitnesses. He said that the investigators got key information from the eyewitnesses that would help police unearth those behind the crime. Now, this is not a blind case. We have got very important information from the eyewitnesses, the officer said. He hoped that there could be a breakthrough within days. Police sources said the investigators are working on five to six different lines including the possible involvement of militants or family-feud. We should not jump to the conclusion because anything at this stage could be premature. The investigators are on it, and they are working round-the-clock, the police officer added. Meanwhile, with reference to security of Shahbaz Taseer, CCPO Ahmad Raza Tahir claimed that the police had provided comprehensive security to the son of Salman Taseer. In his statement, he explained that among the security personnel, detailed with Mr. Shahbaz, included 20 policemen. According to him, they also provided four Elite Commandos solely for the protection and company of Shahbaz, and four ladies Elite commandos for the protection of Mrs. Taseer. He said five personnel of Pakistan Rangers were also deployed for the security of Taseer family. In addition to it, the Taseer family had also engaged four SSG-trained personnel. Meanwhile, no breakthrough has been made in the high-profile abduction so far. However, a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) comprising officers from intelligence agencies and police has begun investigations to recover Shahbaz. Sources close to the investigators confirmed that at least seven people including personal security guards of Taseers family were released late Friday after cross-questioning. The police could not get any important information from them. Among the investigators some policemen believed that the kidnappers got into another vehicle somewhere in the City before shifting the abductee to their hideout to dodge the policemen who sealed the provincial metropolis by setting up pickets at all the leading arteries soon after the incident. The CCTV footage of the incident showed that a CD-70 motorbike and white Corolla was used in the abduction but some policemen say that a black Land Cruiser was also giving back-up to the abductors. Earlier, a traffic warden namely Muhammad Zeshan also claimed that he had witnessed a black SUV, white Corolla and a motorbike speeding away near the Park Plaza Hotel, where they threw out a black rifle-444 from one of the cars and then fled away. The police said that no one, so far, contacted the family or demanded the ransom. Shahbaz Taseer, who runs many companies his father had founded, was kidnapped in broad daylight from Ameer-ud-Din Road when he was just near to his office on Friday. On the other hand, fingerprints of the kidnappers have also been sent to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) crisis management cell for verification. According to the police, the investigators are also questioning the history-sheeter gangsters detained in kidnapping cases in different jails. The police registered the case on the complaint of one aunt of the abductee namely Ayesha Haq. The victim family asked the police to register the case on the statement of the aunt of the victim because Sheryar Taseer the younger brother of the victim was already under threat.
