KARACHI - As many as 19575 seats have been increased in the government-run colleges in view of the matriculation result and now 99,800 seats are available for first-year admission in different groups in 124 government colleges of Karachi. Director General Colleges Sindh/Chairman Centralised Admission Policy (CAP) Committee-2009, Prof. Dr. Rafique Ahmed Siddiqui said this in a press briefing on the CAP policy and procedure adopted this year, held at Government College for Boys and Girls SRE Majeed, Stadium Road, on Monday here. The number of seats available in colleges last year was 80225 in six groups, which were Pre Engineering, Pre Medical, Computer Science, Commerce, Humanities and Home Economics but now they have been increased by 19575, he said. He added that a meeting of all principals of Karachi colleges would be held soon to resolve issues of classes and other arrangements in view of increased number of seats this year. Last year, a total of 82,000 placements were made for admissions in government colleges of Karachi in different groups, he said. He added that the 92000 admission brochures were sold out last year. This year total 99,942 students (81,066 in Science group & 18871 in Arts group) have passed matriculation exam, while approximately 5000 candidates are expected from O Level, and other education boards, he said. Siddiqui further said that the candidates who have passed O Level, or passed matriculation exam from boards outside Karachi, Technical Board, General Science (Computer) group, and Home Economics group shall submit their forms at only two branches of Bank Al-Habib, which are Karimabad and M.A Jinnah Road. He added that this would help in better scrutinizing of the forms. Prof Siddiqui said that 16 claim centres have also been established, 9 for female and 7 for male candidates. Number of claim centres was 12 last year, 7 from female and 5 male candidates, he added. He said 2 per cent quota for girls students with co-education and 2 % quota for disabled candidates have been allocated this year also, as previous year. The new colleges, which were opened last year, are Government Degree Girls College, Orangi Town Sector 11, Karachi, Government Degree Girls College, Qasba Colony Karachi, Shaheed Muhtarma Benazir Bhutto Government Degree Girls College, Manzoor Colony (Azam Basti), Karachi, Dukhtar-e-Mashriq Government Degree Girls College, Jamshed Road Karachi and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Government Degree Boys College, Bihar Colony, Karachi, he said. A proposal has been sent to the Education Secretary to give SNE to these five colleges for transfer and posting of teachers there, he added. Siddiqui said in many colleges new faculties are going to be opened, in this regard Computer Science faculty would be opened in Adamjee Government Science College, Karachi, Computer Science faculty in Government Aisha Bawany College (M) Karachi, Humanities faculty in Government College for Men, Nazimabad Karachi, Pre-Engineering and Pre Medical faculties in Government Degree Boys College, K.M.C Store, Computer Science faculty in Government College for Women, 11-F New Karachi, Commerce faculty in Government Degree Girls College, Orangi 11.5, Commerce Government Degree Girls College, Orangi 7-C, Computer Science faculty in Government College for Women, Saudabad, Pre-Engineering faculty in Government Girls Degree College, Metroville SITE and Commerce faculty in Government Degree Girls College Mehmoodabad. He said that the board has approved the affiliation of different colleges for the faculty of commerce in view of increasing interest of students in commerce group. We as CAP members are bound to give a student admission in the same faculty where he or she is requesting, he added. He said that as per court decision 650 lecturers are regularised and they are getting posting orders from Secretariat and they would be posted in various colleges of the province on the basis of domicile. Siddiqui said that 1230 vacancies of lecturers were vacant. He said the Sindh Public Service Commission was requisitioned to recruit 650 lecturers six months back and now they are being posted on the basis of domicile. He added that the rest of vacant posts would be filled soon. He added that the record of 519 ad-hoc lecturers has been sent to Sindh Public Service Commission as well. He said that 5873 teachers are working in government-run colleges throughout Sindh province. He added that Regional Directors would appoint the non-teaching staff from grade 1 to 15 as per his or her discretion. He said that the CAP would not buy any furniture for DG office and any other office because required funds are not available. He added that the audit report of CAP was yet to be completed and it would be presented to media in next press briefing. The promotion of college teachers from BPS-17 to BPS-18 and BPS-18 to BPS-19 has already been done while the promotion of BPS-19 teachers to 20 grades is expected soon. He added that the notification of promotion of BPS-17 and BPS-18 grades would be issued soon. The process of selling of placement forms is going to start from 28-07-2009, he said. The price of CAP Brochure is Rs50 this year while this brochure was sold at Rs75 last year, he added. The last date of issuance of placement forms is 8th August 2009, which is tentative and many be extended if required, he said. This year the task of selling and submission of CAP brochure is given to Bank Al-Habib Limited, he added. He said the admission brochures would be available at 50 bank branches in 18 towns of Karachi while last year this facility was available at 42 branches, he said. The number of bank branches has been increased so that the candidates could easily avail the facility, he added. Siddiqui further said that the CAP members would monitor and visit different bank branches and resolve problems of the students on spot. All colleges shall act as a guidance centres for the students.
