ISLAMABAD - Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank Limited (PPCBL) became the 11th State Bank Governors Cup Inter-Bank Super Series crowned champions after defeating star-studied ZTBL by seven runs in a nail-biting final played here at National Cricket Ground Friday.

State Bank deputy governor Saeed Ahmed graced the occasion as chief guest. State Bank MD Qasim Nawaz, SBP Chief Manager Islamabad Sajjad Ali Shah, ZTBL President Syed Talat Mahmood, National Assembly Additional Secretary Shaukat Ali, SBP Senior Officer and Media Coordinator Islamabad M Faheem along with sizable crowd, families and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

ZTBL’s decision of fielding first failed to bear fruit as PPCBL posted massive 211-6 on the board in 20 overs. Mobeen Hamid hammered 46-ball 70 hitting four fours and six sixes. Against all the odds, Mobeen played superbly and punished the high-flying ZTBL bowling at his will. ZTBL had the services of top Grade-II wicket taker Munir-Ur-Rehman Tanzil and first class players Alamghir and Ahsan, who were bowling with great accuracy utilizing their great bowling experience, but Mobeen played with lot of authority and never looked in sort of trouble. But he remained unlucky not to complete a well-deserving century, as he was out at the boundary while attempting to hit a ball out of the park. He was ably supported by Asad Ali, who played 44 balls to slam impressive 56 hitting 12 fours and one six. After both these players’ departure, PPCBL were restricted by ZTBL bowlers to 211 in 20 overs. Nadeem Abbas was the pick of ZTBL bowlers as he clinched 3-24.

ZTBL were off to flying start in their runs-chase and scored 24 in only just seven balls, but they lost both the openers within three deliveries. ZTBL kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, and it seemed they would fall well short of the target, as they had lost four wickets for just 34, but despite losing wickets, they had a very solid run-rate. ZTBL were given a real boost by the pair of Umar Javed and Ahsan, who both almost took the match away from PPCBL, as the pair put on 100-run partnership in only 11 overs. ZTBL required further 74 in 50 possible deliveries, but at that stage due to delay in chief guest’s arrival, the match was stopped for 15 minutes, which proved as a turning point in the result of the match, as soon after the match was resumed, both high-flying Ahsan and Umar lost their rhythm. Ahsan got a very charming life, when a dolly catch was dropped yet he failed to take benefit from it and got himself run out while trying to take a second run. On the very next delivery, Muneer was clean bowled.

It looked like all over for ZTBL and their ambitions of lifting the trophy looked all but over, but at that stage, when ZTBL required further 66 runs in 24 balls, skipper Alamghir came to bat and turned the entire situation of the match with some unbelievable hitting, as he struck four sixes in one over. With his smashing batting, Alamghir brought his team close to victory, but then he played a poor shot which was neatly caught at long on boundary. Set batsman Umar Javed, despite getting two balls to hit seven, failed to hit winning runs, as PPCBL won the entertaining encounter by six runs. Umar made unbeaten 58, Ahsan 40 and Alamghir 33.

Chief guest State Bank Deputy Governor Saeed Ahmed gave away winning trophy and Rs 100,000 to winning team captain Tariq Mehmood, while runners-up trophy and Rs 50,000 cash was handed over to losing team skipper Alamghir. Mobeen was named player of the match and given trophy and Rs 5000 cash.

Speaking at the occasion, the chief guest announced to continue lending helping hand to different sports especially women sports. He also promised to establish women cricket and other teams of SBP.
