UPPER DIR – Security forces deployed on the border in Upper Dir foiled another attempt by Afghan militants to stage cross-border attack and killed at least eight militants, besides injuring many others, officials said on Thursday.On Sunday last, troops patrolling on the border in Sadbar Kallay of Upper Dir had come under attack by militants believed to be belonging to the fugitive Maulana Fazlullah group. Pakistan says Fazlullah has safe haven in Kunar province of Afghanistan. At least 13 soldiers were killed in that attack.In the fresh clash that reportedly took place on late Wednesday night, security forces clashed with militants when they attempted to launch another attack from Afghanistan,” an official source said. “The security forces killed eight militants in the clash and injured several others,” he claimed. The claim could not be confirmed from independent sources. Meanwhile, locals have contacted militants across the border to secure bodies of the slain soldiers. The militants had taken with them bodies of many of the martyred soldiers in June 24 attack on Sunai Darra. Sources said Taliban wanted release of their imprisoned members in KPK in exchange of soldiers’ bodies to security forces. The condition, the sources said, created deadlock in talks. However, it could not be confirmed from officials that militants had set condition of releasing Taliban prisoners in exchange of soldiers’ bodies. Another Grand Jirga of Sunai Darra and surrounding area is leaving for Kunar for talks with the militants. An influential of Tehsil Brawal, the main town where Sunday’s attack took place said on condition of anonymity that they would be successful in getting soldiers bodies from the militants. People residing in the Upper Dir have expressed profound grief over the killing of soldiers.
