LAHORE The Pakistan table tennis team participating in the World Team Table Tennis Championship in Moscow has brought a different kind of humiliation for the country. It has been learnt that captain of the three-member team Abbas was to play in the team event match against Guernsey but a walk over was given against Pakistan when Abbas did not appear for the match and as reports received here say, he reached the venue about an hour-and-a-half late. Sources said that Abbas at the time of match was taken to a lunch by none other than the president of the Pakistan Table Tennis Federation, who is also in Moscow with the team. Pakistan is taking part in both the mens and ladies team event and three each players are appearing in the championship while one official is accompanying the team. When contacted, the secretary of the federation looked upset over the development and said that he too received the report of walk-over and he did not know details of the incident. I am trying to contact the officials in Moscow but no one is available. The president of the federation is also in Moscow and he would surely look into the matter, said the secretary. But reports coming from Moscow said that it was the president who took the player to a lunch given by some person Vivick, who deals in equipment supply to Asia. It is not clear as yet whether it was a business lunch or something else which was relished at the cost of countrys name when hundreds of thousands of rupees were spent by the Pakistan Sports Board to ensure the teams participation in the championship.
