Renewing their pledge to thwart conspiracies against Pakistan and Islam, the citizens, political activists and civil society organisations celebrated Yaum-e-Takbir with national zeal and enthusiasm as a number of functions were held here to mark the occasion on Wednesday.

The workers of PML-N and its women, lawyers, traders, kissan and youth wings and Young Pakistanis Organisation held a number of cake-cutting functions, rallies and seminars to mark the occasion. Local parliamentarians including Malik Abdul Ghaffar Dogar, Begum Shaheen Shafiq, Syed Javed Ali Shah, Rana Ijaz Noon, Haji Ehsanuddin Qureshi, Hamza Shahid Lodhi, District President Bilal Butt, city President Rana Shahidul Hassan, Shahid Mukhtar Lodhi, former MNAs Rana Mehmood-ul-Hassan and Sheikh Tariq Rashid, Begum Sultana Shaheen, Sarwat Khan and Umer Farooq Bhatti led different functions.

Addressing a Yaum-e-Takbir ceremony, Hameed Raza Siddiqui and others said that the day demanded that the nation should achieve self-reliance in all the fields. They added that entire world had hatched conspiracies against Pakistan’s nuclear programme and tried to stop us from conducting nuclear tests. “However, Mian Nawaz Sharif rejected all pressures and threats and conducted the tests,” they added. They said that the imperialist powers later on strangled democracy in Pakistan with the help of dictator.

They paid rich tributes to Nawa-i-Waqt Editor-in-Chief Majid Nizami for pushing Nawaz Sharif to conduct the blasts. “He (Majid Niazami) was the only person who interpreted the nation’s aspirations before Nawaz Sharif. Also, he is the only person who kept the tradition of Yaum-e-Takbir celebrations alive during the last 17 years,” they added.

Referring to the prevailing situation in the country, they said that it was outcome of ill-advised and pro-US policies of previous rulers. In Bahawalpur, the day was celebrated with renewed pledged to make Pakistan stronger. Speakers paid glowing tributes to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, scientists and armed forces over paving the way for ensuring successful nuclear tests on May 28, 1998.

The functions were held at the residence of Provincial Minister for Cooperative Iqbal Channar, at Bahawalpur Institute of Nuclear Oncology and other places. The participants included Fouzia Ayub Quraishi (MPA), Dr Shahab Fatimi and Dr Haroon Khursheed.

In Sargodha, the main ceremony held at Anjuman-e-Tajaran office at Bagh-e-Jinnah where Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Gilgit Baltistan Ch Hamid Hameed, Provincial Parliamentary Secretary Abdul Razaaq, MPA Dr Nadia Aziz, President Anjuman-e- Tajaran Khawaja Ahmed Hanif, Secretary General Sheikh Naeem Aslam Kapoor and Shahid Kamboh participated in the cake-cutting ceremony.

In Gujranwala, the main event was held at the resident of Federal Minister Khuram Dastgir Khan under the supervision of Muslim League leader Khan Ghulam Dastgir. Speaking at the ceremony, Ghulam Dastgir said that on May 28, 1998, Nawaz Sharif gave a powerful  response to India by ignoring the pressure from America and other world powers. They said that by adopting the way of atomic explosion, Nawaz Sharif joined the prestigious club of seven nuclear powers and did not accept external pressure.
