OUR STAFF REPORTER KHANEWAL District Police Khanewal on Monday claimed to have smashed an inter-district gang of robbers by arresting its three members including the ringleader involved in several cases of armed robberies. The police have also recovered three snatched motorcycles, illegal weapons and Rs 70,000 from their possession. We have nabbed three members of this notorious gang. These robbers had become a symbol of terror in the entire locality as they had been committing armed dacoities during night hours, District Police Officer Muhammad Waqar Abbasi told reporters while addressing a news conference here on Monday. The SSP said that at least nine cases of armed robberies registered in various police stations of the district have been traced against the arrested bandits. During preliminary investigations, the arrested robbers have confessed to the police that they used to snatch motorbikes, cash and valuables from the motorists and passers-by during night hours, Waqar Abbasi maintained. The DPO further said that another three members of the gang are still at large and raids are underway for their arrests. We expect more recovery of looted valuables as raids are underway to the other members of this gang, he added. The arrested robbers were later identified as Shahbaz alias Shabbo, Masood alias Bagga and Zaheer Ahmed. Waqar Abbasi also said that a police team constituted to nab the bandits involved in robberies, collected information about the gang and raids their hideout in the wee hours of Sunday. The police team arrested three robbers and also recovered looted valuables from their possession. Responding to a question, Waqar Abbasi said that armed patrolling has also been intensified to provide protection to the lives and property of the citizens while various police squads have been constituted to chase the bandits in case of an armed robbery takes place in the area. To another question, he said that extra-ordinary security measures had been taken to ensure peace in the district during the holy month of Muharram-ul-Harram and the police are providing security cover to all Majalis and processions.
