LAHORE: A writ petition Tuesday was moved to the Lahore High Court seeking directions for the Punjab Assembly speaker to notify the resignation of Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, opposition leader in the provincial assembly.

Abdul Rasheed Sindhu, a voter of PP 151, filed the petition and submitted that the speaker had no power to reject the resignation of any member. He said under the Article 64 of the Constitution resignation of a MPA deemed to be accepted after its submission.  Therefore, he said, the speaker had no jurisdiction to reject the resignation. Petitioner said Rasheed of PTI betrayed his voters and the mandate given to him by tendering resignation. –Staff Reporter
