LAHORE - Punjab Governor Malik Rafiq Rajwana has urged doctors not to go on strike because such actions are contradictory to the oath they have taken.

Addressing the second Sehat Khidmat Award distribution ceremony at a hotel here on Saturday, he said that recognising services of healthcare professionals was a step in the right direction that would help resolve issues at hospitals. The Punjab Health Facility Management Company and the Primary and Secondary Health Department had arranged the ceremony to honour extraordinary performers. Minister for Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafiq, Minister for Primary and Secondary Health Khawaja Imran Nazir, P&SH Secretary Ali Jan Khan, Lord Mayor Col (r) Mubashar Javaid, Health Special Secretary Dr Faisal Zahoor, PHFMC CEO Ali Amir, Additional Secretary (Development) Fatima Sheikh, Additional Secretary (Technical) Dr Asim Altaf, Additional Secretary (Drug Control) Muhammad Sohail, CEO (Health) Dr Yaddullah and other officials attended the function.  Rafiq said that historical reforms had been introduced in the health sector. He said that a number of new hospitals and specialised health institutions had been constructed and capacity of existing ones had been built.

He said that routine immunisation coverage had increased from 50 percent to 88 percent over the last two years.

Nazir said the Punjab health sector was catering to 120 million people’s health needs besides providing health facilities to patients of other provinces. He said that thousands of patients would visit public hospitals and benefit from free health facilities every day. He said the entire system should not be blamed for individual lapses. He said for the first time in the history of the province a system of reward and punishment had been introduced.

Ali Jan Khan said that appreciation and encouragement of doctors and health professionals was essential. He said the basic objective of Sehat Khidmat Award was to acknowledge services of health professionals.

Earlier, the governor visited stalls set up by different health programmes for awareness. He distributed Sehat Khidmat Award to best performers of the department.
