ISLAMABAD – Ministry of Capital Administration and Development (CAD) and UNESCO launched UNESCO’s Disaster Master Game in the federal capital at a launching ceremony held in Islamabad College for Girls F-6/2, Islamabad.

According to a press release, the event was attended by Federal Secretary, Ministry of Capital Administration and Development, Riffat Shaheen Qazi as chief guest along with Joint Secretary Ministry of CAD, Rafique Tahir, Director/Representative UNESCO Pakistan, Dr Kozue Kay Nagata, officials from government departments and principals and teachers of various government educational institutions.

UNESCO’s team from Disaster Risk Management Section delivered the orientation session about the use of game to the participants. During the ceremony Disaster Master Games were distributed to more than 35 government principals of Islamabad, to conduct the game playing session in their respective schools and to increase the awareness level of students about the disaster risks reduction by playing the game.

Director UNESCO, Kozue Kay Nagata stressed the need of spreading the awareness related to disaster risk reduction through this kind of innovative and interactive teaching material in schools. The game is fun and effective for learning.  She emphasised that the children are the agent of change and schools are the appropriate platform to carry out such activities.

The Federal Secretary highlighted the importance of extra curricular activities, which directly contribute in student’s personal development; she thanked UNESCO to develop such tool, which will stimulate discussion amongst students about disaster risk reduction.

UNESCO Pakistan adapted and produced Pakistani version of Disaster Master Game in English and Urdu to promote understanding of key natural hazards and preparedness among children above age 7.

It provides both youth and adults with a fun and engaging media through which to learn about and prepare for natural disasters. This is the pilot version of the game and after receiving appropriate feedback from stakeholders such CA&D in validation process the final version will be produced.
