KARACHI - A heavy agenda of 61 development projects worth Rs94.691 billion would be taken up by Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in its meeting Thursday (today). Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Sardar Asif Ali Khan will preside over the meeting of CDWP in Islamabad while Additional Chief Secretaries of Planning and Development Departments of all provinces and senior officials of the federal ministries will attend the meeting to discuss the projects. Transport and Communication Division will dominate the agenda of the meeting as its 16 development projects amounting to 15.340b would be considered by CDWP. A project, Environment Friendly Public Transport System for major urban centre of the country such as Karachi, Lahore, Quetta, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Hyderabad and Sukkur with estimated cost Rs5 billion will be taken up by CDWP for approval. Initially, this environmental friendly CNG buses project was restricted only to provincial capitals, but now the federal government has extended this project to other cities which would be based on Public Private Partnership. According to agenda of the meeting available with The Nation, other projects of this sector such as Construction of By-Pass Shatial-Thor Nullah to Diamer Basha Dam project (existing Karakorum highway) with estimated cost of Rs3.928 billion, improvement and up-gradation of existing single lane metalled road to double lane mettaled road at Kohala-Dhirkot with Rs941.039 million, establishment of the Highway research and training centre with Rs914.810 million, construction of road from Hub to Dureji District Lasbella involving cost of one billion and other projects also would be taken up by CDWP. At least 12 projects of Water and Power Division involving cost of Rs6.489 billion are also on the agenda of the CDWP meeting. The water resources projects such as Sukkur Barrage rehabilitation and improvement project with estimated cost of Rs2.478 billion, Sabakzai Dam (2nd revised) project with Rs2.545 billion, research studies on drainage, land reclamation, water management and use of drainage water with Rs426.902 million, Chashma right bank irrigation stage-3 project in NWFP (revised) with Rs563.491 million, construction of office building of Indus River System Authority (IRSA) with cost of Rs68.863 million, acquiring consultancy services for preparation of detailed design of 75 small dams located in Kohistan and Nagarparkar with estimated cost of Rs50.392 million and other projects would also be considered in the meeting. According to agenda, the five projects of energy sector with heavy amount of Rs28.960 billion expected to be taken up by CDWP in today meeting. Under the proposed plan of electricity distribution and transmission improvement project, at least Rs195.606 million for MEPCO, Rs246.048 million for IESCO, Rs108.910 million for HESCO and Rs144.230 million would be spent on LESCO. Other projects of energy sector, establishment of 26 Mega Watt Shagrathang Hydropower project on Kuchara Lungma District Skardu with Rs5.281 billion, 72 Mega Watt Diber Khwar Hydropower project with Rs14.217b and establishment of 4 Mega Watt Hydropower project at Thak Chilas with estimated cost of Rs11.13b likely to be taken up by CDWP. Moreover, seven projects of Industries and Commerce Division involving over Rs5b would be taken up by CDWP. CDWP is likely to take up a project of establishment of Women University at Multan with Rs1.715 billion as on the special directive of Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, this project was made part of the agenda of the meeting.
