NEW YORK - America's Tim Smyczek reached the US Open second round on Wednesday, but only after suffering a scare on the highway when his courtesy car ran out of petrol. The 25-year-old was on his way to the Flushing Meadows site for his match with Australia's James Duckworth when his tournament Mercedes ground to a halt on the hard shoulder. "It was actually kind of funny because we were going down the highway, and I notice the cars started passing us. We were kind of slowing down," said Smyczek. "I look up and you can see the rpm metesr. It's at zero. I'm like, 'Wait a minute, why are we just coasting?' We were in the left lane and the lady makes it to the middle lane, and then we got to a spot where we had to merge. –AFP
