RAWALPINDI - Two Afghan nationals, allegedly having fake computerised national identity cards (CNICs) issued by Nadra, are contesting Local Bodies (LBs) elections under strict surveillance of intelligence agencies from different parts of Rawalpindi, well-placed sources told The Nation here yesterday.

One of the candidates namely Ijaz Khan is holding Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ticket from union council (UC) Fauji Colony’s Ward No-4 for the slot of general councillor with election symbol ‘Bat’ while the second one namely Sohbat Khan is contesting election as an independent candidate with election symbol ‘Balti’ in Ward No-5 of UC-70 Shakrial (North) but has the full blessing of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), sources added.

The sources revealed that the fraud of both Afghan candidates was detected by the two premier intelligence agencies of the country and an interrogation in this regard was underway. In a day or two, the intelligence agencies would write a letter to Vigilance Department of Nadra with a request to block the CNICs of both candidates and their other family members, they said. However, both candidates denied the allegations that they were Afghan and had obtained fake CNICs from Nadra.

According to sources, one Afghan national Ijaz Khan son of Ajab Gull (CNIC number 37405-03423059) has been residing in House ZB-3223, Street Number 4, Fauji Colony for the last many years after obtaining fake CNIC from Nadra while providing bogus information. They said the real name of Ijaz Khan’s father is Martta Khan who is living in Garda Seeri, Shang Village of Paktia province, Afghanistan. “Martta Khan is an Afghan commander,” sources added. The fake Pakistani CNIC number of Ajab Gull son of Khan Akbar is 37405-0342312-1, they said.

Sources maintained that Ijaz Khan’s brother Haider Khan has also been settled in Italy and had applied for asylum there as an Afghan national.

Similarly, Sohbat Khan son of Sahib Khan (CNIC number 37405-0821438-5), a resident of House No 247, Street Number 16, New Madina Town, Shakrial has also got fake CNIC from Nadra and is contesting LB polls from UC-70 as an independent candidate for the slot of general councillor having full support of PML-N since the UC has been left open by the party leadership owing to many aspirants for party ticket.

They said the intelligence agencies have started investigation against Sohbat Khan, his father and father-in-law Eid Muhammad son of Sher Khan who is living in Basali village. “A strict action against the fake CNICs holders Afghans are on cards in one or two days as the intelligence agencies will write a letter to Vigilance Department of Nadra HQ to block the cards of the Afghan nationals,” sources claimed.

Talking to The Nation, Ijaz Khan, the PTI candidate for general councillor, changed his stance twice as first he said that it was wrong that he was an Afghan national but in the next moment he mentioned that he was an Afghan national. “It will be better for you (this correspondent) if you meet me somewhere to discuss the issue,” said Ijaz in response to a query that his father Martta Khan had obtained fake CNIC with Ajab Khan’s name. He also admitted that his brother Haider Khan was staying in Italy and had applied for asylum being an Afghan national.

Nonetheless, Sohbat Khan accused his political opponents and Vigilance Department of Nadra of launching a propaganda campaign to oust him from election contest. He said that two of his political rivals were enjoying good relations with Vigilance Department’s in-charge of Shakrial area. “They misguided him about me that I am an Afghan national. But I don’t care about the propaganda. I am contesting election for the slot of general councillor and will gift my seat to N-League after winning the LB polls,” Sohbat Khan claimed. He admitted that intelligence agencies were verifying his documents, adding that he would sue the political opponents and Vigilance Department’s in-charge after elections. No big wig of PTI or N-League was available for comments on the issue.
