HAFIZABAD

Former federal parliamentary secretary Ch Afzal Hussain Tarar was declared elected as chairman Union Council No-8, Kolo Tarar, following a recount of votes on his application.

Ch Afzal Hussain Tarar, father of State Minister Saira Afzal Tarar, was defeated by PTI Ch Mamoon Jafar Tarar in the second phase of the local bodies elections held on November 19 after neck and neck fight. But later on the application of defeated candidate, Returning Officer Allah Ditta Warraich allowed recounting of the votes. However, the PTI candidate secured a stay order from the Lahore High Court against the recount. But Afzal Tarar also filed a petition in the LHC for a recount of the votes which was granted. The recount of votes was conducted under the supervision of the Returning Officer, according to which Afzal Tarar was declared elected by 121 votes. It is to be noted that Ch Afzal Tarar is the candidate for slot of chairman District Council Hafizabad. Meanwhile, PTI District Organiser Ch Shoukat Ali Bhatti, former district president Ch Amanullah Sandhu and other leaders have strongly condemned, what they called, new style of blatant rigging after the announcement of result by the Returning Officer. They said that they have filed an appeal against the recounting with the Election Commission of Pakistan. They said that they also produced a copy of the writ petition to the RO according to which recounting could not be held till November 30. “But the RO, due to the pressure of the ruling party, recounted the votes without informing us,” they alleged. They strongly condemned the ugly tactics by changing the result with the collusion of Returning Officer. They said that they have informed PTI Chairman Imran Khan and declared that they would launch protest against the new style of rigging to please the father of State Minister Saira Afzal Tarar.

Meanwhile, Panic gripped Sukheke Mandi when the supporters of newly-elected PML-N General Councillor Muhammad Afzal Qasab and defeated candidate of PTI Basharat Bhatti indulged in indiscriminate firing. However, no one was hurt.

The police rushed to the spot and arrested Aqeel of PML-N and Basharat and Nusrat of PTI and have registered a case against ten workers of both the parties.
