LAHORE - A death row convict died of brain haemorrhage in Kot Lakhpat Jail, officials said on Tuesday.

Omar Rasheed was shifted to the Jinnah Hospital for medical treatment on Monday after his condition deteriorated. Reportedly, Rasheed had suffered huge depression which resulted in the brain haemorrhage. He was admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital, where he expired on Tuesday.

The police have removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating. The body will be handed over to his family after the post-mortem.

According to jail authorities, Rasheed had been sentenced to death on murder charges.

The Factory Area police had registered a murder case against him under Section 302 of the PPC.

Earlier on Dec 22, a condemned prisoner had also died of heart failure at Mianwali Central Jail. Muhammad Liaquat, 55, of Bhakkar had been sentenced to death by a district and sessions judge in 2010 for murdering his wife Bashiran Bibi, a mother of nine, on suspicion.

His revision plea had been lying with the apex court. According to doctors, Liaquat died of a heart attack.
