Multan - A bank guard was shot dead and another injured by outlaws when he resisted their bid to rob a branch of National Bank here on Nawabpur area on Tuesday, police said.

The six robbers managed to escape after looting Rs169,000 from Nawabpur Branch of the bank, confirmed City Police Officer Sultan Chaudhry.

The deceased guard was identified as Abdul Sattar, 55, and the injured Abid Ali. The bank staff told police that six robbers entered the bank building and held the staff hostage at gunpoint. However, the guard Abdul Sattar put up resistance on which one of the outlaws shot him in the head, leaving him dead at the spot.

Police sources said that the 15 centre received emergency call as soon as the dacoits entered the bank and Elite Force jawans were dispatched to the bank. However, the robbers fled just one minute before arrival of police.

Police launched investigations into the incident and bank staffers were being quizzed till filing of this report. Meanwhile, the body of deceased guard was handed over to the heirs after autopsy.
