PESHAWAR - The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to computerise the record of jail inmates and install close circuit television cameras and other equipments to improve jails security across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Sources said in the first phase, the government would install these instruments in Peshawar and Haripur Central Jails, where modern computers would also be installed to computerise the overall data of the detainees. In this connection, a meeting was also held in Civil Secretariat, with Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the government. It was also attended by high-ups of information technology and Interior Ministry. The meeting assessed the overall security management system of prisons in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and after detailed deliberation it decided to computerise the record of criminals in Peshawar and Haripur in the first phase. It decided that this network would be extended to various district jails in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It also decided to install CCTV cameras at the jails boundary walls. Earlier, the government had also decided to shift the main central jails of Peshawar to another district, as the present building is severely prone to militant activities posing serious security threats. It is worth mentioning here that Peshawar Central Jail lacks sufficient medical facilities for inmates due to which several Taliban insurgents escaped while excusing medical check up in Khyber College of dentistry. Later, jails superintend, deputy jail superintends and medical officers were suspended for allowing Taliban outside jail premises. In January 2011, an international narcotics smuggler managed to flee from Peshawar Central Jail. He - Abdul Baseer - was convicted for life term by the anti-narcotics court after charges of drug pushing proved. The jail authorities at initial inquiry concluded that Abdul Baseer was helped out in his escape by the transport squad that supplies food to prisoners. At that time no suspension of responsible jail authorities had taken place. No formal inquiry committee has been constituted so far. No efforts to capture against the escaped drug pusher have been made by the police authorities.
