Slamming the Indian media for calling pro-liberation leaders "separatists", the veteran Kashmiri Hurriyet leader, Syed Ali Gilani said, "We are not separatists but freedom fighters." Speaking at a seminar in Srinagar, Syed Ali Gilani said, "We are being written and addressed as separatists in the Indian media as if Jammu and Kashmir is a genuine part of India and we are fighting to seek separation from it, which isn't a fact. But the fact is clear, we are freedom fighters and we are fighting against the forcible and illegal occupation of India over Jammu and Kashmir." "I don't understand why doesn't media call and write us by our own name as freedom fighters. We condemn it. If they know Kashmir has been a disputed territory from the very beginning, then why they are doing it," he questioned. The veteran leader said, the media has a vital role in a society and its role and responsibility gets doubled when they are covering 'conflict in their own land'. "Media has a role to speak in favour of the oppressed not the oppressors," he remarked. He pointed out that in occupied Kashmir where head of Indian police was involved in human rights violations, where were mediamen and judiciary, why they were mum over these issues? "We have no bias against media. But they need to speak and write the truth. India has illegally occupied our land and they are oppressing our people by all the forcible means, why it is not reported" he added. Highlighting the issue of settling the non-locals, Gilani said that they were being settled in the occupied territory under a conspiracy hatched by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to convert Jammu and Kashmir into a Brahman state. "These non-locals are a great threat to our society, our culture, customs and morality," he added.
